Recalled Portable Air Conditioner Causes Fire in Toronto
Last week, Toronto Fire Services were called to a building in Toronto for a reported structure fire. The cause of the fire was determined to be from a portable air conditioner that had been recalled by Health Canada in December of 2016.1 The recall was initiated because the portable air conditioners could overheat—causing a fire hazard. It’s estimated that 36,000 of the recalled portable air conditioners were sold in Canada.

A Better Option
People often think they only have two choices when it comes to their home comfort—either live with the original cooling (and heating) systems in the home or use portable air conditioners (and heaters) to try and stay comfortable. However, there is another option available—ductless mini-splits.

- Safer Option: Ductless units are more secure than window air conditioner units. Window units can easily be pushed in during a break-in, but ductless unit work with only a small connection between the units.
