As the nice weather finally arrives, we also see the return of allergy season—a time of sneezing and itchy, watery eyes for those that suffer from pollen, ragweed or other allergies. Many people seek shelter from allergy symptoms inside their home but are disappointed to discover that symptoms can be just as bad inside as they are outside. The reason? Every time someone comes into your home, they are bringing irritants in with them and many HVAC systems are not equipped to completely remove the offending allergens.
All air conditioner filters are not made equal. Many people are surprised to learn that the primary purpose of air filters is to protect your HVAC system—preventing dust and debris from contaminating the delicate parts of your air conditioning unit—and not to filter the air in your home.
To trap allergens, your filter must have a high MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating. The higher the MERV, the more restrictive the filter; however, it’s important that the filter is compatible with your HVAC system. A high MERV filter can restrict airflow and harm your system if it wasn’t designed to work with a HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) type filter.
Additional protection from allergy season can be achieved through the use of whole-home air purifiers. These units clean the air after it leaves the air conditioner but before it’s distributed throughout your home, increasing the overall indoor air quality. We recommend the Lennox PureAIR Purification System, which removes dust, dirt and pollen from your home in addition to mould spores, bacteria, viruses, odours and chemical vapours.
Annual Air Conditioner Service
The regular maintenance of your air conditioner is essential to keeping your home irritant-free during allergy season. Annual AC service can prevent dust, mould and pollen buildup in your system, which can be circulated throughout your home if it’s not cleaned properly. A certified HVAC technician will be able to provide recommendations to keep your system (and home) pollen and allergen-free.
